Telekom Slovenije, the nation’s leading telecom provider, has developed an expert IoT team to seize the numerous smart city opportunities to transform Slovenian municipalities into innovative, connected communities.

One of the innovative solutions developed by their team is the Modro mesto app, which aims to improve the quality of life for Slovenian residents. The app allows users to easily monitor real-time occupancy of parking spaces and charging stations, check weather forecasts and air quality, and stay updated with current news. By combining all smart solutions and essential information in one app with real-time data, Modro mesto offers a truly smart city app for Slovenian residents.

Key points

  • Seamless API Integration: The success of the project relied on comprehensive API documentation and technical assistance, allowing air quality data to be fed into the app at a set frequency without technical friction.
  • Cellular-Based IoT Efficiency: Using cellular networks for data transmission ensures that sensors can be strategically placed in various locations across municipalities without needing complex wired infrastructure.
  • Calibrated Accuracy: The data is not just raw sensor output; it is carefully calibrated to ensure that the information reaching the end-user is reliable and scientifically sound.
  • Awareness as a Health Tool: The project demonstrates that simply making “invisible” pollution data visible via a smartphone can significantly change community behavior and improve general well-being.

Challenge

The biggest challenge was finding a modern, reliable, and accurate air quality sensor and interoperable data provider that could seamlessly integrate with the telecom’s proprietary app (Modre mesto).

Solution

The Airly sensors which are strategically placed in various locations, capture environmental data and transmit it via a cellular network to Airly’s servers. These measurements then are carefully calibrated to ensure accuracy. Once calibrated, the data is integrated through an API with Modre mesto, improving real-time monitoring and analysis.

Implementation

20 particulate matter and gaseous pollutant sensors were installed by Telekom Slovenije in 8 municipalities. Airly also provided comprehensive API documentation and assistance to integrate air quality data into the Modro mesto app and deliver live data at a set frequency.

Results

The air quality data from the sensors is displayed in the Modro mesto app, helping residents stay informed especially during periods of increased pollution. By raising awareness and promoting healthier habits, we encourage people to protect themselves by staying indoors when necessary.
